Some Self Absorption

by Ann Bernard on January 10, 2008

My thought of the day (too tired to have more then one) on what I’m learning about start-up life now that we’ve been launched for about 4 Days is that it’s going to be a lot of hard work to ensure I don’t get completely self-absorbed.  I don’t remember a time when I’ve had quite so many demands on my time and so many people to stay in touch with while having a million and one things to accomplish.

I want to hide under a rock and be able to just get my todo lists done…but huh, it doesn’t quite work that way.  My job is to be out and about, to (for g’sake) get us some funding, to interact with out wonderful members and to continue to grow our little baby (as in small and newborn) community.  Meanwhile, I want to stay abreast of what’s going on in my other communities (Pownce, Twitter, StumbleUpon, MyBlogLog, etc) and keep reading my usual blogs.  I don’t want to be posting, posting, posting and not responding to my own posts, replies to my posts or interacting with what other people have to share.

Oh…and what I really need to be doing a better job at is tracking who is talking about us!! And communicate back with those wonderful people like Joe at Design vs. Develop, Patrick over at StopDoingNothing and Micah at Learn to Duck

I had a great chat with Aaron and Geoff on their new BlogTalkRadio Show District of Corruption yesterday...be sure to check out the segment from 12:30 minutes into it to about 20 minutes into the show.  Thanks guys for having me!

These are the joys of social media my friends…it’s wonderful and time consuming when you want to ensure two way conversations and not be a self-absorbed (annoying) community member. I want to continue the two way conversations especially with the people who have been very supportive of us…

I’m going to learn to become more efficient and get the right systems in place.  I finally got back onto Seesmic thanks Johann over there at Seesmic (I still owe him an email) and I’m planning on doing my first video tomorrow. I realize that’s one way communication but it’s quick and hopefully fun one way communication for people to enjoy.

One of the things that has been killing me is accepting/scheduling meetings that are not in alignment with what we are working to accomplish right now.  I’m going to be pushing meetings out…unless they’re with potential investors.  This is definitely an area I will get more selfish about.

I’ve also focused my other partners on our current and immediate needs so they can engage in making those things happen along with me. They’re forbidden to mention anything that is irrelevant or an unnecessary distraction until we’ve met our next major milestones.

We have the development team’s marching order in place which is always a priority to all that we do.

So with this blog post now written (11:15 pm EST) I’m going to go answer more emails and engage with people the best that I can for the next few hours.

See you on the site and out and about!!
